El 27 de Abril de 1521 murió en Mactán, Filipinas, Fernando de Magallanes, un militar, marino y navegante portugués, descubridor (para los europeos) del paso natural navegable entre el Océano Atlántico y el Océano Pacífico que hoy lleva su nombre.
Esta expedición, en la que Magallanes murió, se convirtió en la primera circunnavegación de la Tierra
El 20 de Septiembre de 1519 zarpó la expedición desde el puerto de Sanlúcar de Barrameda, actual Cádiz, cruzaron el Atlántico con rumbo sudoeste llegando a la bahía de Santa Lucía (Rio de Janeiro) el 13 de Diciembre
Siguieron hacia el sur hasta el Rio de La Plata y continuaron hasta la Bahía de San Julián, en la actual provincia de santa Cruz, Argentina
El 1 de Noviembre de 1520 llegaron a un estrecho que llamaron “Estrecho de todos los santos” luego de sortear un laberinto de canales naturales llegaron al Mar del Sur, al que llamaron Océano Pacífico
Desde su partida de Cabo Deseado, (Chile) pasaron 3 meses sin tocar tierra, se les pudrió el agua, se les acabaron las provisiones, por lo que contrajeron escorbuto, llegándose a pagar varias monedas por una rata y comían sangre con aserrín
El 6 de Marzo de 1521 llegaron al fin a las Molucas cumpliendo el encargo de Carlos I, pero el 27 de abr
