Devika Johnson: Which Moment Changed Your Life?

When I reflect on the question, “Which moment changed your life?” I realize it’s not just one moment but a series of defining moments that have shaped my journey. Each one has altered the course of my life, setting me on a path I couldn’t have predicted.

When I reflect on the question, “Which moment changed your life?” I realize it’s not just one moment but a series of defining moments that have shaped my journey. Each one has altered the course of my life, setting me on a path I couldn’t have predicted. However, the most recent moments that truly changed the trajectory of my future happened within these past two years.

It started with a year full of doctor’s appointments, tests, and uncertainty. I had been struggling with an unknown illness, a sense that something wasn’t quite right, but I couldn’t pinpoint what it was. Eventually, I had to move back to British Columbia to be closer to my family while undergoing tests and focusing on recovery. Being surrounded by my loved ones was crucial during that time. After a year away, I returned to Toronto—my home—and began to re-immerse myself in the life I was determined to reclaim.

I was eager to get back to my dance career. I had goals and dreams, and I was motivated to achieve them.

I wanted to dance with a group of strong, empowering women,
to be part of something greater than myself.

But the universe had other plans. During an audition I had been dreaming about for months, I tore my ACL. At that moment, it felt as though the world had stopped. Everything I had worked for—the years of training, the sacrifices, the endless hours of preparation—felt like they had been ripped away from me.

At that moment, I had a choice. I could allow myself to drown in self-pity, to let anger and frustration take hold, or I could view the situation as an invitation to grow, to step into a new version of myself. And that’s exactly what I decided to do.

I used this time of forced recovery to build myself in other ways. I took a step back from the dance floor, but instead of seeing it as an end, I saw it as a chance to focus on other aspects of my career. I worked on my resume, improved my acting and singing skills, and updated my dance portfolio. I set new goals during the recovery period, ones that didn’t rely on physical activity. I made plans for when I would heal, knowing I would come back stronger than ever.

But the story didn’t end there. As I continued post surgical knee rehabilitation, I received a second diagnosis—one that explained why my body had been betraying me. My condition had made me more susceptible to injury, which is why something as simple as an audition had led to an ACL tear.

Suddenly, I wasn’t just recovering from an injury—

I was fighting for something bigger.

On top of the physical challenges of ACL surgery and rehabilitation, I was now facing a deeper, more personal battle. I was fighting for the chance to one day carry a child, for the hope that my body wouldn’t deteriorate prematurely. Despite the overwhelming challenges, there was a strange sense of peace in realizing I could still work toward a future, even though it looked nothing like what I had envisioned.

This was the moment when everything began to make sense.

The universe hadn’t thrown these challenges at me to break me—
it had thrown them at me to strengthen me.

The recovery process wasn’t just physical; it was spiritual, emotional, and mental.

It tested my resilience, my ability to face hardship with grace, and my willingness to keep moving forward even when the road seemed uncertain.

Throughout this journey, I learned to trust myself in ways I never had before. I had to rely on my strength to carry me through the toughest days. I had to learn to advocate for myself in the medical field and be kinder to myself during the hardest moments.

As the new year approached, I felt a sense of clarity and purpose. I created new goals, made vision boards, and outlined steps to move forward.

Life-changing moments don’t always come wrapped in success and happiness—they come in the form of struggle, pain, and hardship. But through these challenges, we find the strength to rise higher than we ever thought possible

Looking back, I see that these moments didn’t break me—they made me who I am today. They gave me the courage to face an uncertain future with hope, resilience, and determination. Most importantly, they reminded me that

every moment, no matter how difficult, has a purpose.

This is just the beginning of my journey. I am excited for the life-changing moments that will come next, knowing they will continue to shape and refine me, teaching me new lessons, and bringing me closer to the person I am meant to become.
