The Editing Checklist You Didn’t Know You Needed

Before you hit publish, hit BNN Publication’s editing process—it’ll change your manuscript forever. This checklist will take your book from good to can’t-put-it-down.

So, you’ve written a book. You’ve poured your heart into the plot, shaped your characters, twisted your ending, and now you’re ready to send it off into the world.

Or… are you?

Before you hit that glorious “Publish” button or shoot your manuscript off to an agent, there’s one critical step that often gets glossed over or done half-heartedly: editing. Not just spellcheck. Not just giving it a quick skim. We’re talking about deep, transformative, manuscript-polishing editing. And to get there? You need a real-deal editing checklist.

Lucky for you, we’ve put together The Editing Checklist You Didn’t Know You Needed—and trust us, by the time you’re done, your manuscript will feel like a whole new beast (the good kind).

  1. The Big Picture: Structural Editing

Let’s start from the top. This is not about commas and typos (yet). Structural editing is all about the bones of your book.

  • Does your story arc make sense? Every great book has a rhythm—a beginning that grabs, a middle that builds, and an ending that sticks. If you’ve got saggy middles or rushed conclusions, now’s the time to fix them.
  • Are your characters pulling their weight? That side character you love… are they necessary? Does your protagonist grow? Is the villain believable?
  • Scene transitions—are they smooth or jarring? Read chapter endings and beginnings back-to-back. Do they flow? Or are readers getting mental whiplash?
  • Pacing check. If readers are falling asleep in the middle of your high-stakes courtroom drama, something’s off. Likewise, don’t speedrun emotional arcs. Balance is everything.

This part might hurt a little. You’ll cut stuff you like. You might rethink whole chapters. But it’s worth it.

  1. Chapter-Level Cleanup

Now we zoom in a bit. Each chapter should feel purposeful and alive.

  • Does each chapter move the story forward? Avoid filler. If you can skip a chapter and still follow the story, it might not need to be there.
  • Cliffhangers, hooks, and intrigue. Not every chapter needs to end in a gasp, but it should at least make the reader want to keep going.
  • Tone consistency. If your book is a dark thriller but Chapter 9 reads like a sitcom episode, flag it.

At this stage, think of yourself like a TV showrunner—ensuring each episode contributes to the season’s arc while being compelling on its own.

  1. Dialogue Deep Dive

Dialogue is where your characters come alive—or fall flat.

  • Does it sound like real people talking? Read it out loud. If it feels stiff or overly explanatory, revise.
  • Avoid info dumps. If your characters are explaining the entire world’s backstory in one breath, it’s time to break it up or rethink how that info is delivered.
  • Character voice differentiation. Can readers tell who’s speaking without tags? That’s a good sign.

Bonus tip: Cut dialogue tags when they’re not needed. If we already know who’s talking, less is more.

  1. The Emotional Gut Check

This one’s easy to overlook, but it’s vital.

  • Are readers feeling what they’re supposed to feel? Fear, love, sadness, thrill—whatever your genre, your words need to carry emotional weight.
  • Too much telling, not enough showing? “She was sad” is fine, but “Her fingers trembled as she folded the crumpled letter again and again” hits different.
  • Re-read the emotional peaks. Are they earned? Or do they feel forced?

It helps to give your manuscript a rest and come back after a few days. Fresh eyes make for sharper feelings.

  1. Line-Level Polish (A.K.A. Copyediting)

Here’s where the magic of rhythm, flow, and style comes into play.

  • Sentence variety. Mix long and short sentences to keep things dynamic.
  • Clarity above all. If a reader has to re-read a sentence three times, you’ve lost them.
  • Watch your adverbs. “He ran quickly” vs. “He sprinted”—go for power verbs.
  • Remove redundancies. “She nodded her head” → “She nodded.” We get it.

This is also a great time to run tools like Grammarly or Hemingway—but don’t rely on them fully. They’re helpers, not editors.

  1. Proofreading Like a Pro

This is the final polish—the sparkle, the shine, the cherry on top.

  • Spelling and punctuation. Run spellcheck, yes—but then read it yourself. Slowly. Maybe even backward (it helps!).
  • Format consistency. Double spaces, inconsistent chapter headers, rogue indentations—catch them now.
  • Homophones and sneaky mistakes. “Their,” “they’re,” “there.” “Affect” vs. “effect.” These little guys love to trip up even the best writers.

And if you’re exhausted by this point (understandable), consider bringing in someone fresh. A new proofreader can catch what you’ve become blind to.

  1. The Beta Reader Test

Your manuscript might feel done, but there’s one more vital step: feedback.

  • Choose the right beta readers. Not just friends who’ll say “It’s great!”—get thoughtful readers who know your genre and aren’t afraid to critique.
  • Give them questions. Ask what confused them, where they got bored, what they loved.
  • Don’t take it personally. Take it professionally. Use it to grow.

Beta reader feedback can reveal holes in your plot, confusion in character motivations, or pacing issues you didn’t even notice.

  1. Edit the Edits

Yep, now you edit again. Based on all the notes, corrections, and feedback, go back in. Refine. Revise. Tweak.

The editing process isn’t a one-and-done situation. It’s a cycle—and each round gets your manuscript closer to “publishable” quality.

So… Where Does BNN Publication Come in?
