The dilemma of whether a Shiva bhakt could consume a non veg diet is more about belief than religious parameters. There is so much diversity in Hinduism, and especially in Shaivism, that different traditions would differ on either point. For some devotees of Lord Shiva, following a sattvic (purely vegetarian) diet is important especially in Shravan and reminders like Mondays, or fasting days. For them, non consumption of meat may have a positive impact on their spiritual state and strength of inner discipline during a food fast. Yet, it is clear that not every path of Shaivism forbids meat. Indeed, and especially in the case of some of the sub-sects and communities worshipping Lord Shiva, they honour non vegetarian food as a part of their culture. Lord Shiva is represented as a God, and deity that transcends these material divisions both asceticism and inclusivity. So, if you’re a Shiv bhakt, and decide to include non veg in your diet, that will not make you less of a devotee. In reality, what is important is the intention, the knowledge of the divine, and how one lives out their belief throughout their life, with love, respect and awareness of the spiritual dimension. Ultimately, this is a choice we make based on our hearts, community and teachings we connect to.
