Chemical Formula and Composition
POP is chemically known as Calcium Sulphate Hemihydrate (CaSO4·½H2O). It is derived from gypsum by heating at 150°C (300°F), removing water content and converting it into a dry powder that sets quickly when mixed with water.
Preparation of Plaster of Paris
The reaction for producing POP is as follows:
CaSO4·2H2O → CaSO4·½H2O + 1.5H2O (on heating at 150°C)
When mixed with water, it reverts to gypsum:
CaSO4·½H2O + 1.5H2O → CaSO4·2H2O (sets to a solid structure)
