Magpie Valves Develops PTFE Packing with Ultra-Low Friction for Oxygen-Enriched Environments
Magpie Valves has successfully developed a PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) packing with an ultra-low coefficient of friction of 0.01–0.02, specifically engineered for oxygen-enriched and other demanding industrial environments.
Breaking the Technical Barrier in Valve Materials
Achieving materials with a coefficient of friction this low has long been a challenge in materials science and valve manufacturing. Such ultra-low-friction materials are typically reserved for high-end control valves—for example, those used in nuclear power plants. In these applications, valves must provide extreme precision, long-term stability, and minimal friction to ensure the safe and stable operation of critical systems.
Ultra-Low Friction PTFE Packings
Friction Characteristics:
In dry conditions, standard PTFE against steel exhibits a friction coefficient of 0.05–0.1.
With rising temperatures, PTFE friction decreases due to molecular expansion, reducing contact resistance.
However, elevated temperatures also intensify creep behavior, a critical concern in long-term applications, as PTFE is prone to cold flow.
Creep Behavior Considerations:
When PTFE packing is preloaded with high-strength bolts, its creep is influenced by compressive stress, valve cycling frequency, and operating temperature.
Crystallinity matters:
Between 50%–70% crystallinity: creep strain ≤ 2.4%
Below 55% or above 80%: creep strain increases rapidly
MAX900 PTFE Packing: Superior Performance
Magpie Valves’ MAX900 PTFE packing addresses these limitations with:
Outstanding Creep Resistance – Effectively minimizes deformation and cold flow under continuous operation.
Ultra-Low Friction (0.01–0.02) – Ensures minimal operational resistance, enhancing valve precision and reducing wear.
High Sealing Reliability – Fits tightly within the valve structure, significantly lowering leakage risk and maintaining long-term operational stability.
This combination of low friction, creep resistance, and excellent sealing ensures that valves equipped with MAX900 PTFE packing remain highly reliable even under frequent cycling or long-term operation, meeting the stringent requirements of oxygen-enriched and critical industrial environments.
