Menkes Syndrome Market Growth Drivers & Opportunities

Menkes syndrome affects the body's copper levels and is characterized by sparse, kinky hair, weight loss, and slow growth (often referred to as failure to thrive), along with neurological deterioration.

According to FutureWise analysis, the menkes syndrome market is expected to register a CAGR of 8.72% from 2026-2036.

Menkes syndrome affects the body's copper levels and is characterized by sparse, kinky hair, weight loss, and slow growth (often referred to as failure to thrive), along with neurological deterioration. This condition is caused by a defective gene called ATP7A, which regulates copper metabolism. Male infants are most commonly affected by this disease.

In Menkes syndrome, also known as "steely hair disease," copper accumulates at abnormally low levels in the liver and brain, while the kidneys and intestinal lining accumulate copper at higher than normal levels. The disorder is a rare, X-linked genetic condition resulting from mutations in the copper transporter ATP7A gene. Due to this mutation, copper is unable to reach various cells in the body where it is essential for enzyme function and cellular structure.

The condition may also lead to non-specific symptoms such as hypothermia, hypoglycemia, and prolonged jaundice, which can complicate the diagnosis of neonatal Menkes disease. In most cases, Menkes disease is inherited, meaning it runs in families. If a mother has a defective gene on one of her X chromosomes, each of her sons faces a 50% chance of inheriting the disease, while half of her daughters will become carriers of the gene.

Clinical features indicative of Menkes syndrome include typical hair changes, hypotonia, and delayed neuromotor development, as well as reduced serum copper and ceruloplasmin levels, which support the initial diagnosis. Copper is an essential mineral necessary for several functions in the human body, including metabolism, brain function, and blood cell formation. It is used in very small amounts and plays a role in wound healing and converting iron into a usable form for the body. Copper can be found in various foods and dietary supplements.
