A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is a secure digital key issued by a licensed Certifying Authority to verify the identity of an individual or organization and enable legally valid electronic signatures. It works using Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology, which ensures authentication, data integrity, and non-repudiation during online transactions. Digital Signature Certificate are widely used for government filings, business documentation, e-tendering, and other secure digital processes.
The working of a DSC begins with the application process. An individual or organization applies for a Digital Signature Certificate through a licensed Certifying Authority. During this process, the applicant’s identity is verified through documents, Aadhaar-based verification, or video verification. Once the verification is successfully completed, the DSC is issued and stored securely, usually on a USB cryptographic token.
A Digital Signature Certificate functions through a pair of cryptographic keys: a private key and a public key. The private key is used by the certificate holder to digitally sign electronic documents. This key remains confidential and is securely stored to prevent unauthorized use. When a document is signed using the private key, a unique digital signature is created and attached to the document.
The public key, which is linked to the Digital Signature Certificate, is used by the recipient or system to verify the authenticity of the signature. When the document is opened or verified, the system checks the digital signature using the public key. If the document has been altered after signing, the signature becomes invalid, alerting the recipient that the document’s integrity has been compromised.
This process ensures that the signer’s identity is authenticated and that the document has not been modified after signing. It also provides non-repudiation, meaning the signer cannot deny having signed the document.
