Why Packaging Plays A Bigger Role Than Most People Think

Inbox Group comprises of a team of custom packaging experts and box manufacturers in Melbourne who specialise in delivering effective packaging solutions to enhance the protection and presentation of your product.

The product packaging planning process I expected to avoid became necessary for me when I needed to send out products. My initial plan involved taking boxes to pack everything before completing the process with tape. That process has always worked for me in the past.

The packaging warehouse became more complex for me to understand after I entered its space. The actual area exceeded my expectations of its size. The space contained multiple stacked cartons along with wrapping material rolls and various box types stored on shelves which appeared identical but actually differed.

The space maintained an unbroken sound environment which produced no loud noises but created a continuous sound of work. The space contained people who moved about while they folded boxes and checked items and sealed packages. The space operated with a structured pattern.

The moment I understood product packaging requirements I discovered that packaging work begins before the final stage. The activity exists as its own distinct process.

Why I Needed It

The reason was pretty straightforward. I had a few products ready to ship, and while they were fine on their own, the way I was packing them felt rushed. Plain boxes, random padding, nothing that really matched what I was sending.

I maintained my thoughts about the appearance from the opposite viewpoint. The package delivery person received their item, which showed some signs of being handled without proper care. The situation made me feel uncomfortable.

I began my research about appropriate product packaging instead of using the packaging materials which I already possessed.

At some point during my journey, I discovered Inbox Group. The name appeared to me during my search for packaging materials but I did not consider it important at that moment. The information remained with me throughout the time I spent away from it.

Inside the Warehouse

Walking around the warehouse made things clearer. Before that, product packaging was just something I clicked and ordered online. Being there in person was different.

There were sections for different materials—light boxes, heavy-duty cartons, protective wraps. I picked up a couple of boxes that looked almost identical, but one felt noticeably stronger. That small difference caught my attention.

What stood out most was how people were choosing their packaging. No one seemed random about it. They were thinking about what they were packing—weight, shape, how far it was going.

It made me realise there’s more thought behind product packaging than I used to give it.

The entire scene followed a specific rhythm which involved someone stacking flattened boxes while another person sealed a package and a forklift driver operated his machine at a slow pace. The environment operated at an intermediate speed because activities proceeded at their natural rhythm without creating haste.

A Small Moment

I was standing at that location to determine which box I should take. I probably spent more time thinking about the situation than I needed to.

A staff member approached me to inquire whether I required assistance. I responded with a statement that expressed my desire for safety without requiring anything beyond that.

He nodded and said, “Safe usually comes from the right fit.”

That was it. Simple, but it made sense.

He explained briefly how the size and strength of the box matter more than people realise. Too much space, and things move around. Too tight, and you risk damage.

It wasn’t a long conversation, but it changed how I approached the whole thing.

The Packing Part

Once I got everything home and started packing, the process felt different. Slower, but more intentional.

Putting objects into boxes, positioning, putting padding on it--it was not an easy task, yet it was not some mindless one. It has a little bit of a time when a package fits just right, everything is in place.

I did not think I was going to notice that, but I did.

Second-guessing things also came to my mind. Should I add more padding? Is this box too big? There is something amusing about product packaging that you might not anticipate yourself thinking as much about small details as a result.

Final Thoughts

At its end all was packed and prepared to leave. It appeared that the room was tidier, and better arranged as though the work was done right.

In hindsight, I was not anticipating that product packaging would have any significant impact on it, which it had. It was not in a large, noticeable manner but in little things that made the entire process easier.

It is one of the items that you do not really put in mind until it is required. And then you find out that there is more to it than just putting something in a box.

I will, more likely, attempt to be simple-minded next time. But now at least I understand that it can be a long way before investing a little extra thought in the packaging of the products.
